When I go to interview, people may asked me " What is design?"



My answered is:" good design can improve people life!"



but what mean of good design? from Consider Reep's design principles: good design need to based on four elements, Balance, Proportion, Sequence and Consistency. These four elements need to operate in coordination. if one of them not equal, then it is not a good design. Expect Reep's design principles, good design may be effect by different culture and receiver 's habit.



For example, Japanese style is simple and image is must important than everything. So for Japanese design, they like to use typographic became their design layout main theme, and present the message, there will have less information(text) on it.

For other country, the design are most focus on function, they want their reader can get the message directly.

Culture is effected design, we may be different imagination on same products or things. for e.g: red is a lucky color for chinese, but you can also image red it present danger/ warming color. So good design need to follow four design elements and different culutre's wants.

"F", everyone know it is one of the characters. "F" is also effect our reading habit. Our read patten are F-shaped. That mean we will read from left hand corner , from top to down. So when the web design, also follow this patten. Most websites are designed with diagonal reading path, is made that reading would go from top left of the page to bottom right. So when you visit the web, for example, yahoo, google...etc, you can find out that their logo is put in the left upper part. Then you can see the headline or contents in the upper parts too. Balance is a basic principle of design and it will also work on web design. So that the most important piece of infomation is always put on top left, when the least important one is on bottom right. That why many website haven't placed anything nothing on the bottom right. The company infomation, such as tel, fax, e-maill or address alway placed on bottom left.

online media change people reading habit

Last post, I have talked that when blog became popular, people don't mind to share their daily life to other, that mean people not so much care their privacy. Also online media also change people reading habit. Reading the newspaper or magazine, there have reporter write about the news, the reporter have done many textual research on the news, we believed that news is a professional report. But from the blog, or some online news, may be the information is not correct or misform to the reader. It is because most blogger are lack of professional journalistic judgment and quality. All we read may not be true or counterfeit by other. Online media let people search and got the information faster and easier, but we need to differentiate it
circumspectly.

How to design a web blog?

Blog is all about our own story and you must written in first person. You may be post many photos or the cartoon you like. But it may destroys the contrast of the page and drive away the user’s focus. To create a eyes catching and interesting blog, expect wallpaper, we can still add other elements on it. First we also need to think of the layout. The page length can’t be too large, because it is not an article, reader will not interest to spend too much time on blog. So we can have a simple content, let people know what topics you post. Allow people to read certain posts, focus on content and context. Blogging and traditional journalism play by different rules, so that blog’s design need to be simple and bare-bones templates.

Why blog becoming popular

In 1997, Jorn Barger an American blogger, best known todays. Coined the term “weblog”, and used as we blog by Peter Merholz in his website since 1999. Now have few hosted blog tools such as “Blogger”, that one we are using now. ‘ xanga’, ‘yahoo blogger’…etc. I also using yahoo blogger to write about my daily life. Blog are used to convey information, thoughts and feelings. We can share our life style to other, even we don’t know each other. Before we wrote down our daily in a diary, and keep in our drawer, and don’t want anyone know about it. But when web blog become popular, everyone seem happy to share everything to other. It is like we post our articles in a magazine or newspaper, but now is on the web. Web blog give a chance that every blogger can became a writer, their own story writer. Just to sharing one of my experience, I have writing a blog in yahoo blogger for nearly 3 years. As you know that blogger and reader are interaction, reader can left message in my blog. One day I received a message from a daily newspaper reporter, she request to publish one of my blog’s article. It is my first time that my article can publish in a newspaper!

From print media to online media

In our world, we can be in touch with advertisements everywhere. Media are specialists in generating editorial coverage in the media. advertising agency is getting different companies featured in newspapers, in trade and consumer magazines, on television, the radio and online. We can see many promotion posters of products, movies in MTR station, bus station, shopping mall…etc.. Nowaday, there have something change, advertisements are not just a graphics, they would be a Movable advertisements, we can see when we travel on the bus, train and even taxi. Mobile advertisement also made development on online media, because it the idea to the people that we can get information and contact with people everywhere. For example, now in Hong Kong, Wi-Fi is very popular, all the government building have Wi-Fi support, such as public library, leisure center also have Wi-Fi, it let people easy to work online. So the advertising agency find this a new way for promotion. Online media not like print media, it doesn’t need a real place to show it. Online media is just used internet to send their messages to the receiver all over the world. And there is a big different between print media and online media. For online media, the sender and receiver can have interaction. For example, many company web site, also have a message board or contact way to their customer. The customer can left message or ask question to the company directly. Online media is a environmental advertisements.

Batman, I think everyone must know about it. The new batman movie-The Dark Knight. Their promotion print adv are attracted me. First time when I saw this poster in MTR station, I think it is cool and it is less that a movie poster use dark colour. but after watched the movie, I like this poster more than before. It was because that the poster was not just good in design(balance in visual, the 3 main actor comparable visual weight are equally on the page. It tell you that the moive story will around these 3 men. The Proportion is good, it use a horizontal design, match the design. In the poster, it not have much text on it, it only have the information, such as actor name, the movie name ...etc. But for the reader, it already feel interesting. The dark colour give the reader the feeling of secret. And the three main actor are holding a products that represt their character. After watching the movie, you really know that it is really match. The clown holding a card of Joker. It represent the clown is a joker, he does everything is like a joke. Second , the chief actor -batman, holding his weapon, represent he want to protect something. and the last one, in the movie he has a hero character, but he also have his dark sides, that people who don't know.
Some design, may be first time you see it, you don't think it is good design or may not attract you, but after you watched the movie or know the meaning behind, you can got other feeling of it!

IPD LESSON

Before I study this course. I have study graphic design and being a graphic design for a year. Issues in Publication and Design given me a new concept on design.
Before we study gtaphic design, may face on the idea, what new idea can attract customer? and at that time, we already need to think what is good design. What design can attract people?

For issue in Publication and Design made me think more then design. It bring me many new idea in design, not just graphic, and also web, blog...etc. I need to also think of real publication, not just idea. I will share more in my blog!
